Two individuals, Michael P. Dolan, J.D., and Edward S. Karl, CPA, CGMA, received the 2023 Arthur J. Dixon Memorial Award, the highest honor the accounting profession bestows in the area of taxation. The award was presented Nov. 15, 2023, by the AICPA’s Tax Division during its fall meeting in Washington, D.C.
In addition, Brian D. Myers, CPA, received the 2023 Jonathan Horn Distinguished Service Award on Nov. 14, 2023. This award is bestowed for outstanding current contributions to the Tax Division.
Dolan retired from KPMG LLP’s Washington National Tax–Practice, Procedure & Administration group, where he previously served as national director of IRS policies and dispute resolution. Before joining KPMG, Dolan served as IRS deputy commissioner and acting commissioner. In more than 21 years of service to the AICPA, Dolan served as chair and a member of the AICPA’s IRS Practice and Procedures Committee.
Karl served as vice president–Tax Policy & Advocacy before his recent retirement. In his 40-year career with the AICPA, Karl served as liaison to multiple Tax Division committees, task forces, and technical resource panels (TRPs).
“Mike and Ed have consistently shared their knowledge, expertise, and leadership in the area of tax, benefiting the AICPA and its members as well as the tax community and tax system,” said Blake Vickers, chair of the AICPA Tax Executive Committee and global head of tax at Alamo Group Inc.
The award was established in 1982 in memory of Arthur J. Dixon, who served as chair of the Tax Executive Committee from 1977 to 1980. The award is given for distinguished service in the area of taxation in the spirit of Dixon’s professionalism.
Myers, recipient of the Jonathan Horn award, is a partner at Crowe LLP and currently serves as vice chair of the AICPA State and Local Taxation TRP. He has acted as liaison between the TRP and state CPA societies and other state tax organizations. This award posthumously recognizes the contributions of Jonathan Horn, CPA, both as a TRP volunteer and subsequently as an AICPA staff member.
By granting them a profits interest, entities taxed as partnerships can reward employees with equity. Mistakes, however, could cause challenges from taxing authorities.
