The IRS announced that it will remain open on Aug. 30, canceling a previously scheduled furlough day. However, in making the announcement, IRS Acting Commissioner Danny Werfel said that the Service is still evaluating whether it must take a furlough day in September.
In April, the IRS announced that it would close all public-facing operations, including toll-free operations and Taxpayer Assistance Centers, on May 24, June 14, July 5, July 22, and Aug. 30, with another two days of closings possible in August or September. The furlough days were scheduled in response to mandatory federal budget cuts from sequestration.
The IRS took the first three scheduled furlough days. Like the Aug. 30 furlough day, the July 22 furlough day was canceled after the agency successfully cut costs.
